As with food, drink a lot of fluids, and often. The rule of thumb is that if you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated.
b) Always wear a helmet.
c)
Never Ride Beyond Your Abilities
There is no shame in walking sections of the trail you don't feel confident enough to ride, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
Use Appropriate Equipment for the Terrain
Some bikes are better for different situations. Just because you can see tire tracks, doesn't mean you can ride it with your bike.
Keep Your Speed In Check
Always keep your speed at a level that will allow you to adjust to any unforeseen obstacles or changes in trail conditions.
Know The Trail
Never push the limits on a trail you are not familiar with. You need to get to know the trail you are riding at slower speeds before you can ride it like the trails you're used to.
Slow Down for Blind Corners
You never know what or who is around a corner when you can't see past it.
Stop and Look
Stop and look at sections of the trail that look like they may pose a challenge before you ride them.
Plan on the Crash
Always look at the consequences of crashing in a particular section or on a particular stunt before trying to ride through it. Sometimes a section can look easy to ride but can have deadly consequences to a crash.
Start Small, Go Big
Work your way up to obstacles and stunts. Find ways to practice moves in less difficult and dangerous situations or at lower speeds before committing yourself to something more dangerous.
Play It Smart
If you think what you are doing is not the smartest, you are probably right. Think about what you are doing and trust your instincts. (credit Kevin Tisue)

What do you call a cyclist who doesn't wear a helmet? What good downhillers can do on the bikes is more than eye opening - it's incredible. Chances are, if you get into race with some nations elite riders, you'll see things you didn't think possible on a pushy - and you'll have inspired to chuck it in a bit harder next time.

#2 Chase a faster mate.
You've probably worked out a pecking order when you ride and the fast guys are three or four ahead you. Next time when you're on your favourite track, get right behind the quick boys and chase. Watch where they put their wheels. See how they set up for corners? Take their line, slip up in your knapsack and you'll be up the pecking order in no time.

#3 Buy a mountain bike DVD.
Skill 101 or Flesh Rippin' Carnage Frenzy 4 - it doesn't matter. The trick is to buy it at the bike shop. Ask the guys for their pick because, coll as it maybe, it's not about the vid, It's as much as about engaging with bike shop guys. Make friends. They'll help you with answer, advice, maybe even discounts when you're on pimpin' yo' ride. And, given they ride too, target for tips.

#4 Ride you favourite loop backward.
you can hood through without thinking but toss in a 180 and you will face a whole new track. The good news is you will feel relaxed because you know it, be everything will be different. Instead of railing each corners you'll have to treat it anew. Yes, you'll actually have to think about it.

#5 Go night riding
As riding your loop backward, but trippin'. Night riding is your favourite sport redux. Even you regulars feel weird after-hours. Bum lights from that mate who want you in 24-hours team (or try your new mates at bike shop) and ride beyond a cool everning - perfect at the end of a summer scorcher. You're the center of a light bubble the universe is dark and foreboding. You'll find yourself outside your comfort zone, looking it and learning.

#6 Ride at the height of a 38˚C day.
Opposite of night riding and just as wrong. One day you'll need to ride when it's stinkin'. Why not get a taste of tomorrow? Don't take on anything strenuous and don't forget the sunscreen (lots), water (even more) and keep it short. In every mountain bike ride there's a little discomfort, be it a sore bum, rasping breath or stingin' quads. The still, dry, oven-baked heat you'll suffer climbing through a scorcher is merely another sensation to be experienced - and think about the beer and waterhole's end.

#7 Session a jump.
Past the road gap. Ignore the double. Blow off that drop. Find a small table top and play. Roll it. Again with a pop and land on top. Once more. Now spot the landing and to place your wheels on the downramp. Do it again, and again. Now move to something Just a little bigger. Feel like trying a no-hander? Time to stop for today.

#8 Polish your bike.
There's nothing like a rag session in the shed with citrus degreaser in the air to fire the riding endorphins. Dial some tunes, ensure you favourite beverage is at hand and start by giving you rig a good buff. The move front to back for every component and fastener. Pop a hex key in and snug everything. Whack some lube on your quick release lever (bet ya never did that before). See how much easier they work? By the end you'll have a fully dialed rig and be gaggin' for a ride.

#9 Buy new bit.
Frame, fork, tyres or funky sock. You're continuing from the last tip, lavishing love on your bike. And a loved bike is a ridden bike. You'll need to test you new...whatever took your fancy. Take it to you favourite loop and compare it to the old. There is a height, rotation, pressure, damping adjustment? Use it! Then test it again. Better? Try another tweak. Repeat process.

#10 Ride on the road.
We're all about dirt, but how will do you know where you live? Cruise the 'hood on everning. Perhaps your partner wants to paint the house - scope out what Jones's are doing. Or search out a snake route to the local that will avoid the crap intersection where no-one gives way. Doesn't matter that it's not dirt. It's at the end of your drive way and the pedals are going in circle - it sure beats summer TV.
AMB

Mountainbike Basic Tips

 THE BASICS OF MOUNTAINBIKING

*Riding position ~> Uphill:
- keep your weight forward, keep your chin low over the bars, and try to keep your head forward. Use bar extenders or "cowhorns" to make climbing easier, as these will enable better weight distribution for the steeps and help you to move forward on the bike. If the rear wheel loses traction, you may be too far forward. I ride with my butt behind my seat on the real steeps, with my weight over the rear wheel. If you go too far back, however, you will lose traction with your front wheel and have a hard time steering your bike. Keep your wrists low on the bars, and ride on your pedals with them even to the ground. This lowers your center of gravity.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

*Shifting:
- The left shifter controls the front derailleur which moves your chain on the three sprockets near your pedal. You basically have three gears here. The small ring ( #1 position ) is for low gear to go slow and climb. The middle gear ( #2 ) position is for medium speed and slightly harder to pedal. This can be used for level ground. The larger gear ( #3 ) is for high speed cruising or going downhill. It is the hardest to pedal. The right shifter controls the gears on the back wheel, and you have 7,8,or 9 sprockets. Use these to fine tune whatever front gear you are in. The lower numbers are easier to pedal, then gradually shift up as your speed increase to the higher numbers. As you speed up and go to the highest on the right, you can then go to the next largest gear using the left shifter and then go back down to the lower numbers on the right. Select the proper gear in advance in changing terrain, and if a climb is coming up, then get in your lower gears well in advance.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

*Braking:
- Know which brake controls the front wheel. Usually it is the left on U.S. bikes. The rear brake should be used mostly when going downhill, and the front brake gently (or else you may go over the bars and do an endo). When your brakes are wet, they will not stop as good unless you have disc brakes. Don't brake before going over obstacles, SPEED UP. If the section is too steep WALK. Check your brake pads for wear and position, and keep your rims clean. Adjust braking lever action at the handlebar cable tensioner, and check before riding.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

*Your line:
- Look ahead and pick out your line where you will ride. Plan ahead and look for roots, stumps, logs, streams, holes, water bars, loose gravel, etc... Pick a good line and use momentum in your favor. Watch out for branches, changing terrain, and other riders. Stay in total control. If unsure about a creek crossing or log pile, dismount and check it out before riding it.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

*Standing:
- Sometimes it is good to pedal while standing up on the bike, although requires more effort. Grip the bar end extenders to keep proper weight distribution. When you stand, you lower your center of gravity and the bike handles differently. Most downhills require standing on the pedals equally but keeping your weight back and arms extended. Standing can also stretch out your back, and give you a change of pace and feel when riding.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

*Bunny hop:
- This technique allows you to completely unweight the bike and get both wheels off the ground. Can be done with and without "clipless" pedals. Basically, you compress your bike and push your weight down, and then spring up. Both wheels should come off of the ground for a time. You can use this to go over logs, obstacles, or to unweight the bike.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

*Gear:
- Carry liquids and food when you ride, unless you go for a real short ride. Put about 40 lbs. air pressure in your tires. Lube your chain. Wear hand protection (gloves) and eye protection (glasses) if needed. Use common sense, if a section looks tough WALK IT first. Wear comfortable clothes and make sure your shoelaces do not dangle and get caught in the gears. Test your bike before you ride. Don't let your "expert" friends force you to do stuff over your head. Think smart and follow your own instincts. Ride the best gear you can afford, and maintain your bike.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

*Attitude:
- Have a positive attitude and good mental outlook. Push yourself within your limits but avoid risk taking. Know when to stop riding and take a break. Look ahead and always anticipate the next section. Visualize what you ride. Keep focused, feel your balance points, and have fun! Read books or watch videos to learn new techniques. Ride with your friends who are in your own league. Then, ride with someone better and push yourself a little. Practice courteous trail etiquette and don't forget to look around and smell the roses. Check out the wildlife... Look at the views... Enjoy being a kid again...

for more info, please visit webmountainbike.com

Cleaning your bike(s)

i. One of the most important items of maintenance involves taking good care of your bike after riding it by cleaning off any mud, dirt, or debris accumulated during your ride.

Sometimes if you are riding in clean and dry conditions the bike can be cleaned easily. More often, however, the bike will require a more time consuming and tedious cleaning. This is especially true if you have ridden in muddy or wet conditions, through water, in the rain, or in wet creek beds or bog areas. The Wrecking Crew believes it is most important to clean your bike directly after a ride before it is put away. Some preliminary cleaning can be done before loading up your bike in your vehicle. This may be necessary if your bike is very muddy. Use any available water source (stream, creek, water fountain, river, etc.) and try to rinse off as much mud as possible. Be careful to not to use water from an environmentally sensitive area and let it runoff back into the stream. The lubricants on your chain can be damaging to the stream ecology. Use a water bottle filled with water to spray down any difficult areas such as the brake pads, freewheel, underside, etc. . . Use a stick to remove chunks of mud and wipe off any hard to reach areas. If you have a towel you can dry your bike. Don't get too extensive as you will clean the bike when you return back to your camp or home after you unload it from the car.

ii. When you get back from riding is the time to take action!!

Although you may be fatigued from your ride (we hope it was a good one!) it is important to clean your bike A.S.A.P. so it does not remain dirty and wet. If it doesn't get cleaned now, it will only be more difficult later and lead to other problems! If your bike is not wet, muddy, or very dirty, a good technique involves just wiping it down with a dry towel. Sometimes we use Armor All which is an automotive interior dash cleaner and protector! Spray a little on a dry towel and wipe down the frame, crank arms, handlebars, fork tubes after the bike is cleaned. Do not apply to the rims however, as it will adversely affect the braking. While you do this you will also be inspecting your bike and noticing any problem areas **(loose cables or bolts, debris in freewheel, dirt on derailleurs, etc.)** You can then clean and lube your chain. Never leave a chain wet as it will promote rust and lead to chain failure in the future. Other maintenance steps can be done after your bike has been cleaned.

iii. If your bike was muddy or wet and requires a more extensive cleaning, here is how to do it.

First, you need to use a hose and a bucket with a sponge or cloth and some soap. You can use bicycle soap or automotive soap you would use to clean your car or vehicle. Hose down your bike completely while holding it upright with one hand. You can roll it to clean the wheels or lay it down and let the hose spray spin the wheels to rinse them off. It is also helpful to use a scotch pad to clean dirt and grease off of the rims to allow for good braking. The treads will probably be the worst area for mud. Avoid alot of high pressure spray in the area of the crank bearings or wheel hub bearings if possible. Direct the hose spray into the front and rear brake shoes, the chain rings and freewheel (rear gear cluster), and other areas as needed. Turn the bike upside down and rest it on the seat and handlebars to hose down the underside. Then use your soapy water and clean the underneath. Next, upright the bike or lay it on its side and soap down the rest of the bike. Rinse off with the hose and then towel dry everything.

iv. It is important to now clean the chain and lube it.

Also, it is a good idea to remove any sticks, leaves, or other debris from the inside of the rear gear cluster (the freewheel) with a thin, long tool such as a screwdriver, tableknife, or tool which is designed to get between the gears and take out debris. It is also a good idea to use a regular screwdriver or cloth to clean off the pulleys on the rear derailleur. These are the two gears which the chain rides over and are usually are quite dirty. You should clean the inside and outside surface while moving the chain through the pulleys. Almost always there is a build up of dirt, grease, etc. which should be removed. Remember to lube your chain after washing and cleaning it so that it repels water... You will feel good to know that you are putting your bike away CLEAN and now you can RELAX and ENJOY your post rubricaide festivities!

for more info, guys, refer to webmountainbike.com

Jerai Foothill Ride

only 64km xc ....easy ride lah

Type your photo caption or credit here.

Type your photo caption or credit here.

Type your photo caption or credit here.

Type your photo caption or credit here.

Type your photo caption or credit here.

Type your photo caption or credit here.

Type your photo caption or credit here.
